Junior Squad Lose 2-4 To Great Britain In Opening Sultan Of Johor Cup

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 11 (Bernama) - The national junior hockey squad who put up a gallant fight against Great Britain eventually lost 2-4 in their first Sultan of Johor Cup Hockey Tournament match at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, here Sunday night.

The squad under Arul Selvaraj started well and prevented their mighty opponents from scoring until the 30th minute but Great Britain captain Luke Taylor scored a hat trick from three penalty corners in the 31st, 62nd and 69th minutes while Robert Gleeson slotted in the fourth goal in the 46th minute.

Malaysia replied with two goals through Azwar Rahman in the 49th minute while Shahril Saabah converted a penalty corner in the 51st minute.

Earlier, Argentina who are making their appearance after the 2013 championship, began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Australia, thanks to a field goal by Ladislao Gencarelli in the 65th minute.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champions, India, crushed their arch rival Pakistan 5-1 in their opening match.

India's goals were netted by Ajay Yadav (5th minute), Sumit Kumar (24th minute), Armaan Qureshi (29th minute), Parvinder Singh (33rd minute) and Santa Singh (61st minute) while Pakistan's only goal was scored by captain Muhammad Dilber in the 44th minute.
