Flying Start For Malaysia In 2015 Aff Futsal Championship Group Opener

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama)-- The national men's futsal squad got off to a perfect start in the 2015 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Championship after mauling Brunei 9-1 in the Group A opening match at the Bangkok Futsal Arena in Thailand,today.


Ahmad Fawzul Hadzir Mohamad was the toast of the national side after scoring four goals starting in the first minute, 12th minute and two other goals in the 25th minute, the AFF website; www.aseanfootball.org reported.


The other five Malaysian goals were from own goal by Brunei player Yamin Muhammad in the 6th minute, Muhammad Fitri Muhammad Yatim in the 11th minute, Syed Aizad Daniel Syed Nasir (26th minute), Akmarulnizam Mohd Idris (penalty-28th minute) and Saiful Nizam Mohamad Ali, two minutes later.


Faizul Jefry Zaini scored Brunei's consolation goal in the 9th minute.


Malaysia however face a mammoth task against the hosts and defending champion, Thailand in the second group match on Saturday.


Besides Malaysia, Brunei and Thailand, two other teams - Timor Leste and Singapore are also competing in group A.


Three-time semifinalists Australia spearhead the Group B challenge with four other teams-- Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and also the Philippines.


Malaysia's best performance in the AFF Futsal Tournament was being first runners-up in three previous editions-- 2003, 2005 and 2010.


The annual tournament also serves as the qualifying round for the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) finals in Uzbekistan where the top two teams from groups A and B advance into the final round.
