HANOI, April 28 (Bernama) -- A traffic safety week focusing on children was launched in Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Monday, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The event themed "Children and Traffic Safety" will be held from May 4 to 10 and was organised by the National Traffic Safety Committee in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Asia Injury Prevention (AIP).

National Traffic Safety Committee deputy chairman Khuat Viet Hung said the event hopes to raise greater public awareness of children's safety on the roads.

Information about common reasons for traffic accidents and their impact on children will be disseminated across the country.

Statistics from WHO showed more than 186,300 children worldwide die in road-related accidents annually or equivalent to 500 children every day.

Around 2,000 children are killed in traffic accidents every year in Vietnam.
