PUTRAJAYA, April 27 (Bernama) -- The inaugural OneSilat Championship here on May 23 will bring together 20 silat exponents from 10 countries, including Malaysia.

There will be 10 fights with the winners of each walking away with a medal and RM5,400 cash prize.

The event is also part of the Youth Day celebration from May 22-24.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the time was right to refresh the format of traditional sports such as silat, while maintaining its cultural heritage.

"We are not just seeking to popularise silat, but also give it a fresh look by refreshing the presentation format and making it compatible to modern times, while also bringing it in line with sports entertainment.

"Like it or not, we need to accept the fact that those sports which offer high value entertainment, will receive the support of the public," he added, when disclosing details of the event at the Ministry of Youth and Sports here.

The OneSilat Championship is being organised by Muse Group Sdn Bhd.

Its president Senator Datuk Megat Zulkarnain said the organising team was encouraged by the good response to the event.

"When applications for the championship opened two months ago, we received 1000 applications from both locals and overseas-based fighters," he added.

The OneSilat Championship will be the only known full-contact silat competition in the world, with exponents given maximum free play.
