KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- Celebrating the International Day of Happiness 2015 for the first time today is part of the government's initiative to raise public awareness about the importance of living a quality life without stress.

Department of Town and Country Planning, Peninsular Malaysia (JPBD), director-general, Datin Paduka Dr Dahlia Rosly said the celebration held at the SOGO shopping complex, here is in line with the country's desire to build a prosperous and happy urban community.

"City folks face a lot of pressure, the stress of going to work, riding public transportation and so on, so we have a variety of activities on this day to enrich the atmosphere and encourage people to appreciate the urban environment in a positive way," she told reporters at the celebration.

Dahlia said a happy city is one that is productive, healthy and radiates an aura of love.

"Therefore the department with the support of the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government intends to make this celebration an annual event," she said.

Among the interesting activities at the event are free health screenings, entertainment by the JPBD Buskers group and an opportunity for the public to pose for pictures at a photo booth provided.

The International Day of Happiness is celebrated worldwide annually on March 20.
