Water Supply Disruption In 20 Areas In Klang And Shah Alam

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- A total 20 areas, involving 65,796 homes in Klang and Shah Alam are expected to experience water disruption and low pressure due to pipe leakage.

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) in a statement said the disruption was due to a leakage involving a 1700mm mild steel pipe.

"As a result, the water supply from Bukit Mayong to Lambee on the 1700mm pipe line at Bukit Cherakah which leaked, had to be closed to enable repair work to be carried out quickly," it said.

Until this statement was issued, repair work which started since 1pm today was still ongoing and it is not known when when it would be completed.

Syabas said emergency water supply would be provided via tanker lorry and static water tank only after 24 hours.

In a another statement, Syabas said some users in Petaling , Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang districts are expected to face unscheduled disruption of water supply and low water pressure today.

The disruption of water supply is due to temporary closure of Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant operated by Syarikat Konsortium ABASS Sdn Bhd (ABASS).

"Due to the temporary closure of the plant, some users in 61 locations in Petaling (143,098 houses); 209 areas in Hulu Langat (143,413); 75 areas in the Kuala Langat (47,147) and 85 locations in Sepang (61,469) are expected to face water supply disruption.

"The ABASS consortium has informed Syabas that the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant operations had to be suspended at 8.30pm today due to the contamination of raw water resources from Sungai Semenyih," it said.

It was the fourth time the ABASS water treatment plant was closed within the last two months after Sungai Semenyih experienced similar contamination causing the plant to close on Feb 15, March 3 and March 7.

It said the water treatment plant operator was still unable to ensure when the operation of the treatment plant could resume as it depended on the level of pollution.
