KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Press Institute-Petronas (MPI-Petronas) Malaysian Journalism Awards (MJA 2014) has attracted 892 entries from 409 journalists, MPI said in a statement today.

It said the number of participants increased by 125 or 40 per cent over MJA 2013.

A significant increase of 300 per cent was seen in the Writing/Comment/Columnist/Excellent Criticism category, it said.

This was followed by Best Petronas - Environmental Reporting category (188 per cent), A Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award (107), Best News Reporting (76), Best International Reporting (75) and Best Public Service Reporting (57), it added.

However, the entries for three categories - Best Feature Writing, Best Video News and Special Jury Award - slightly dropped compared to the previous year while Best Photo Journalism category remained the same with 39 entries.

The statement said a total of 13 MJA categories were open to media practitioners to participate, where the best entry would be named winner of the Kajai Award that carries a RM30,000 cash prize and other prizes.

"MPI received one nomination for the Tokoh Wartawan Negara (National Eminent Journalism) Award. A separate event will be held for the award," it said.

The participants are from New Straits Times, Berita Harian, The Star, Utusan Malaysia, Malay Mail, The Sun, Sinar Harian, Harian Metro, Kosmo, Berita Publishing, Sin Chew Daily, See Hua Daily, HCK Media, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, The Rakyat Post and Bernama.

The participating electronic media includes TV1, TV3, TV9, Astro Awani, NTV7, The Star Online TV and BernamaTV.

The awards presentation will be held at the Journalism Awards Night, most probably at the end of April, MPI said.
