Call For Malaysia To Turn World Hijab Day Celebration Into Annual Event

Last update: 01/02/2015

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysian should turn the World Hijab Day celebration as an annual event to increase awareness and understanding about hijab among the multi-racial people in the country.

While making the call, World Hijab Day 2015 Ambassador for Kuala Lumpur Emi Idura Che' Hashim said it was also hoped that the Women, Family and Community Development would help make this aspiration a reality.

"We also hoped that the ministry will help organise the celebration in the future," she told reporters today.

Emi Idura, who is also Top2Toestyliesta managing director and image consultant, today collaborated with several young celebrities to organised the Malaysian World Hijab Day celebration at the KLCC Park here.

The World Hijab Day, mooted by New Yorker Nazma Khan, has been celebrated in 116 countries since 2013 with the aim to nurture tolerance and understanding about the wearing of hijab.

Meanwhile, singer Mizz Nina, or her real name Shazrina Azman, who shared her experience in wearing hijab at the event, said the people in the country need to change their negative perception about the wearing of hijab being 'old fashion'.

"As a Muslim country, the wearing of hijab is something that we should promote. Normally, when we wear hijab, people tend to think that it is not 'cool' and stylish. I think they are totally wrong," she said.

Mizz Nina said the wearing of hijab was an obligation for Muslim women and they should not be afraid of doing it.

In a bid to encourage more Muslim women to wear hijab, Mizz Nina said she, through her fashion line, Madeena, would continue to promote the concept that would be accepted by all, especially the young generation.

Madeena Boutique & Cafe in Damansara Perdana offers an array of trendy yet stylish apparels catered exclusively for the modern women who believe in the beauty of modesty, she added.
