Mee Kari Ketam: A Dish That Stays In Your Heart

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- If you are going south to the land of "Laksa Johor", why not take the exit at Yong Peng Utara and head to Parit Yaani, Batu Pahat to sample another of Malaysia’s favourite dish with a twist, a deliciously spicy curry noodles with one, big fat crab on top!

Sold at stall number 10 of the Taman Perdagangan food court, located right after Petron petrol station, this special recipe was the brainchild of the operator, Siti Marhanim Johari who runs the stall with her younger sister Siti Maliana, 22.

Siti Marhanim or Hanim, 24, opened the stall four months ago after spending six months prior working at a Chinese restaurant in Parit Yaani.

When asked about the popular dish served at her stall, Hanim said 'I learnt to cook from my late mother and that recipe was from her." Hanim's mother passed away when she was 16 and being the eldest in the family, she took up the task to care for her three-month-old brother.

How It Started

That was eight years ago.

"My venture into food business started after I finished SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), which my father forced me to take because if it was up to me, I didn't want to take it. I was busy caring for my little brother," she told Bernama’s Lifestyle and Youth recently.

The eldest of seven siblings, Hanim started out by venturing into the spa business with her cousin but after two years, her cousin got married and they decided to stop.

That was when she decided to sell "Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah", mango pudding and "Roti Arab" at a Ramadan bazaar in Parit Yaani, which has since become a yearly venture.

Prior to opening the stall, she went to work at a Chinese restaurant to learn more about their service and how the owner manages its cash flow.

Mee Kari Ketam and Coconut Shake

Hanim operates the Mee Kari Ketam 7's Sib's stall with the help of her other siblings and her fiancée, Mohd Raeez.

People from as far as Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka have come to savour the "Mee Kari Ketam", priced at between RM9 to RM15 a bowl.

Meanwhile her seafood noodles are sold at between RM9 to RM12 and coconut shake is priced at RM3 (glass) and RM2.50 for take away.

For curry lovers, the dish is satisfyingly good because the thick, spicy curry blends well with the sweet flesh of the crab, adding more flavour to it. Washing it down with a glass of coconut shake completes the experience.

Reservation Needed

This "Mee Kari Ketam" is one dish that you will eat without worrying about how you would look to everyone around you because the taste takes you out of this world.

Hence, it is not recommended for first dates!

Food lovers can drop by at Hanim's stall between 3pm to 10pm, however, on weekends and school holidays, it is advised for patrons to make reservations to avoid coming home empty handed.
