Malaysia To Organise First AFF Beach Soccer Championship In October

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the inaugural Asean Football Federation (AFF) Beach Soccer Championship in Kuantan, Pahang in October, this year.

The announcement was made during the 12th AFF Council Meeting for the 2011-2015 session, chaired by AFF President Sultan Ahmad Shah in Hanoi, Vietnam, Tuesday.

Seven teams have confirmed their participation in the inaugural tournament, namely Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines.

In his opening speech, Sultan Ahmad Shah commented on the draw and said it would be an exciting event.

"I'm anticipating an exciting draw and would like to wish the participating teams all the best," he was quoted in the AFF website;

Sultan Ahmad Shah also said that inspection visits had been carried out on 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup hosts - Vietnam and Singapore - and expressed confidence that all preparations would be ready to host the event.

He also congratulated Vietnam for successfully hosting the Asian Futsal Championships in April and the Asian Women's Cup held in May, while noting that their expertise would help the country in staging the AFF Suzuki Cup.

"Congratulations also to AFF's new member Australia and Thailand for qualifying for the (2015) FIFA Women's World Cup (in Canada) and to Thailand again for qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup," Sultan Ahmad Shah added.

Prior to the start of the meeting, the AFF Council observed a minute's silence for the victims of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 which crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17.
