Hoon And Tan The Only Malaysians Left In Semi-final Of Australian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) - The men's doubles pair of Hoon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong are the only Malaysians to make the semi-final of the Australian Open Super Series Badminton Championship held at States Sports Centre in Sydney, Australia.

In the quarter-final, Hoon and Tan were given a tough fight by Cai Yun and Kai Lu of China before winning 23-21, 21-16 in 47 minutes, said the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.org.

Hoon and Tan will face another difficult task against fourth seed Yoo Yeon Seong and Lee Yong Dae from South Korea in the semi-final.

The Koreans who are the world's second pair advanced after beating the other Malaysian pair, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, 21-15, 24-22 in the other quarter-final.

Malaysia's mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing lost to Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand, 11-21, 15-21 in a quarter-final match.

The Thais will meet the German pair of Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels who beat South Korea's Lee Yong Dae and Shih Seung Chan; 21-18 and 9-21 in the other quarter-final.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) did not send a women's single player to the tournament which offers total prize money of US$ 750,000 (RM2.407 million).
