PENAMPANG, May 14 (Bernama) -- SME Bank today fulfilled its pledge to fly the bank's Y-Biz Challenge 2013 winners, from Sekolah Menengah St Michael here, to Romania.

"We made this pledge last year when the previous winner SM Sains Hulu Selangor won the gold medal for the Young Inventor category at the European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation in Romania.

"They forked out their own money to take part in the exhibition and we thought SME Bank should also play a role to ease the financial burden of future Y-Biz Challenge winners so they, too, can have the opportunity to go to Romania and hopefully, win," Group Managing Director Datuk Mohd Radzif Mohd Yunus told reporters after presenting a RM25,000 cheque for flight expenditures to the winners here Wednesday.

Mohd Radzif said the programme has produced many talents in innovation and entrepreneurship among students since it began two years ago with some of the former participating schools going on to create their own achievements.

"Seeing all the achievements by some of these schools goes to show that the SME Bank Y-Biz Challenge is a good platform to expose students and teachers to the creative and innovation industry," he said.

The SM St Michael students won RM20,000 for their easy pouring set, which also earned them a place in a three-day exhibition in Iasi, Romania beginning May 22.

The four fifth-formers -- Galedine Lind, Jovi Moosom, Carlsson Paddy Edwin and Chelsie Feeley Bachee -- said they came up with their winning invention after a long queue for drinks at their school canteen, and have patented their clay-based product which can pour up to 10 cups at any one time.
