KANGAR -- Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis (KUIPs) will receive its first batch of 80 students starting on May 15 this year, its Rector Dr Mohd Mizan Mohamad Aslam said.

He said the students comprised those who would undergo a foundation programme in Muamalah and those pursuing Diploma in Islamic Banking.

They will be placed at KUIPs learning centre in UniCiti Alam, Sungai Chuchoh, Titi Tinggi near Padang Besar, he told reporters here today.

For a start, KUIPs is offering diploma-level courses including in Islamic Studies (Usuluddin and Syariah) and Islamic Property Management, as well as degree-level courses in Islamic Banking and Finance, Business Management and Entrepreneurship.

Mohd Mizan said KUIPs was established through the Perlis Islamic Religious Council's Endowment Unit following the proposal made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak at Istana Arau on March 3, 2013.

He said in the long-term, KUIPs had also planned to build its permanent campus on a 20-hectare site near here to accommodate its students.

KUIPs management had also applied for approval from the Education Ministry to take students from Asian countries, including Timur Leste, with priority to be given to those from poor families, he added.
