KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Creations by eight young aspiring Malaysian batik entrepreneurs dazzled the runway in a fashion show at the Galeri Seri Endon last Saturday.

The eight designers at the batik parade were Jaludin Zaini, Jamilah Shukri, Karl Ng, Masrina Abdullah, Nik Intan Rashid, Rizal Jasman, Suhairi Marlina and Zoe Tan.

The guest-of-honour of the fashion show, which was held over hi-tea at the Galeri Seri Endon in Bukit Damansara in conjunction with Mother’s Day, was Puan Sri Hajah Noorainee Abdul Rahman, wife of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Galeri Seri Endon, which was incepted in 2007, was envisioned and inspired by Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood, the late wife of former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

It is wholly-owned by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia (Penyayang) and is part of the Malaysia Batik Crafted for the World Movement, spearheaded by Abdullah.

Ready To Move On To Next Level

The gallery is a platform to showcase the talents of young Malaysian batik designers who are past winners of Piala Seri Endon, the most prestigious batik design competition in Malaysia.

The annual competition was held since 2003 by Penyayang to unearth new talents for the Malaysian batik industry.

"Galeri Seri Endon is ready to move on to the next level. It has served well as an incubator," said Penyayang Chairman Nori Abdullah.

Today marks the beginning of Galeri Seri Endon as a self-sustaining business,” added Nori, who is also the wife of Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin.

Vehicle to Manage Galeri Seri Endon

She said the gallery is collaborating with Alayra Design Sdn Bhd, which is the vehicle that will manage Galeri Seri Endon from now. The owner of Alayra Design Sdn Bhd is the 2013 winner of Piala Seri Endon, Nik Intan Rashid.

"With this new collaboration we hope that the Galeri Seri Endon will reach new heights in terms of market expansion, overseas reach and brand recognition," she said.

Nori said the gallery would continue to work with all past finalists of the Piala Seri Endon, adding that she welcomed the collaboration and support from other batik designers as well, as it moved to the next phase of its growth.

Nik Intan Appointed As Managing Director

Nik Intan Rashid, who is now the Managing Director of Galeri Seri Endon, has a background in the advertising industry and pursued her love for batik during her leisure.

Before winning the Piala Seri Endon Batik Design competition in 2013, she attended classes to learn all about the art as well as the business of batik. A few pieces of Nik Intan’s designs were displayed during the show.

“With an IT Degree tucked under her belt, 10 years of working experience in Advertising with Leo Burnett; a burning passion for batik creation and a vivacious personality, Galeri Seri Endon will be in good hands,” said Nori.
