Malaysia Needs Experienced Players For The World Cup In May - Azlan

KUANTAN -- National hockey team captain, Azlan Misron thinks Malaysia needs the services of experienced hockey players for the World Hockey Championship in The Hague, Holland on May 31.

Azlan said based on the performance of the national hockey squad at the Champions Challenge 1 Hockey Competition which ended today, it clearly showed that Malaysia must spruce up its defence machinery if it did not want to be the punch bag team.

"Regardless, it is up to the coach to decide on the final list to shoulder the challenge to Holland, because he is well-versed in the matter," he told reporters here, Sunday.

Despite failing to advance to the finals, Malaysia created its own history in national hockey when it ended the challenge in third place after beating Ireland 4-2 at the play off today. The success exceeded Malaysia's achievement in Argentina two years ago, when it emerged fourth.

He said generally the players had performed in earnest tonight and as a team regardless of whether they were old or new.

"It is hoped the success tonight can give more motivation for the national team to create an upset in Holland," he said.

Meanwhile, experienced player Tengku Ahmad Tajudin Tengku Abdul Jalil concurred with Azlan's opinion that the services of senior players were needed to face the challenge in Holland.

To a question if new player Kevin Frederick Lim could shoulder the challenge of playing in defence, he said it was rather difficult as new players needed time to jell with the team.
