TAWAU -- Sabah Assistant Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Hamisa Samat has called on university students to be proactive and smart in using their rights and freedom to enter politics.

She said this was vital in creating a fresh political environment and for the students to become the main catalyst for national transformation.

"The country needs students who are smart, positive and proactive, not the ones who are anti government. That's why the students need to use their rights properly so that they would not drift away from the right track," she said at the launch of the Delegasi Bayu 2014 programme on Sunday.

The programme was organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Caring Society and Community Development Club at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kalabakan near Tawau.

On the programme, Hamisa, who is also Tanjong Batu assemblywoman, said the participation of university students in community service programme like this should be emulated by staff of private organisations and non-governmental organisations alike.

"Not only it would benefit the community, but it would also inculcate the spirit of volunteerism and cooperation among the student, hence realising the true concept of 1Malaysia," she added.
