LABUAN -- The 2014 Indian Cultural Night, organised by the Indian students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMS KAL) is the best platform to highlight their culture to other communities, said Deputy Minister of Education P. Kamalanathan.

He said the spirit of the Indian students to organise the cultural evening, not only forged a closer relationship among the Indian community, but also provided an opportunity for others to know the unique culture of the community.

"The students should be proud of their efforts in organising this cultural evening because it's seen as maintaining the heritage of the Indians throughout the ages," he said at the Indian Cultural Night here, Saturday night.

Kamalanathan said the programme was also in line with the government's aspiration to make Malaysians more tolerant towards each other by promoting an understanding and respect for each others' cultures.

Meanwhile, Kamalanathan asked students who received funds from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to use it intelligently and control their spending.

He said he had received numerous complaints from students who said the PTPTN loan was not enough to cover their expenses in campus and promised to refer the matter to the relevant authorities.
