KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21-- Four national sailing athletes bound for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be competing in several competitions abroad as part of their preparations for the world’s biggest sporting event in July.

National sailing coach Mohd Afendy Abdullah said the selection of the tournaments was based on the movements of the world's best sailors who had booked tickets to the Olympics.

He noted that Olympian sailor Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy will be competing at Laser Standard Men’s World Championship on Feb 9-16, while Nur Shazrin Mohd Latif at the Laser Radial Women’s World Championship on Feb 21-26. Both competitions will be held in Melbourne, Australia.

"After the competition in Australia, all Laser class sailors will gather in Europe. We will be joining a few competitions, including an invitational meet in Palma, Spain and the third round of the World Cup Series in Genoa, Italy in April before returning home.

"The national sailing squad will depart for Greece to participate in the Laser Senior European Championship in May and then to Tokyo in preparation for the Olympic Games," he told reporters after attending the 2019 SEA Games post-mortem meeting with representatives from the National Sports Council, National Sports Institute and Olympic Council of Malaysia here today.

Besides Khairulnizam and Nur Shazrin, who have booked their tickets to Tokyo in the Laser Standard and Laser Radial events respectively, Malaysia will also be represented at the Olympics by Nuraisyah Jamil and Juni Karimah Noor Jamali in the women's International 470 class.

Meanwhile, Mohd Afendy is optimistic that national women’s sailor Geh Cheow Lin would achieve positive results at the 2020 RS:X Windsurfing Asian Championships in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 15-21.

The competition serves as the last platform for Asian windsurfers to hunt for a slot at the 2020 Olympics.

The sailing events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be held at Enoshima Yacht Harbour in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture from July 27 to Aug 6.
