KANGAR, Jan 6 -- Malaysia are targeting to win gold at the World Cup Woodball Championship 2020 (WCWC2020) scheduled to be held in Perlis from July 24 to 30 this year.

Malaysia Woodball Association (MWA) president Elaine Tan said she based this on the fact that Malaysian players had improved in the past few years.

“I have confidence that Malaysia will get some medals especially gold medal for this championship. Back in 2013 and 2014, Perlis had already upgraded their course to be ready for this event,” said Elaine.

She was speaking to Bernama after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the International Woodball Federation, MWA and Perlis Woodball Association (PWA) at a hotel here last night.

The event was witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, the patron of PWA.

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Pauh Putra Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Arau, Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia (IPGM), Behor Pulai, Kolej Matrikulasi Arau and Dataran Dato’ Sheikh Ahmad are the five venues for the championship, which will be held in Perlis for the first time.

Meanwhile, PWA president Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Kamarudin Hussin said more than 3,000 players from about 20 countries are expected to participate in the championship.

"Among those who have confirmed their participation are Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea and Indonesia,” he said.

He said the championship is on the Visit Malaysia 2020 calendar.
