Sarawak looking into providing rental service for accommodation as in Airbnb

KUCHING, Jan 4 -- The Sarawak government plans to carry out a study on the feasibility of property owners renting out their apartments and condominiums as accommodation for travellers, similar to that offered on Airbnb platform, to boost the state’s housing sector.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said he believed that by doing so, it could encourage more people to buy houses as investment.

He said it has become a trend where families prefer to stay in an apartment or condominium, instead of hotels, when on holiday.

“This trend started in Australia, Europe and several developed countries. It’s time for us to take a similar step.

“Therefore, the state government, through the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, will look into  apartments with potential to be rented out for the purpose,” he told a press conference after the launch of ‘Block Pandalela’ at P'Residence, Taman Desa Wira here today.

Towards that end, he said, the state government would also have to determine the terms and conditions, including licence, to regulate the service.

At the event, national diving queen Pandalela Rinong was presented with a key to a condominium unit at the block as a gift in recognition of her achievements in the sport and for bringing glory to the country.
