KUALA TERENGGANU, Nov 12 -- The current monsoon season in Terengganu has not jeopardised tourism industry in Lake Kenyir, but has helped increase the source of income of many houseboat operators in the area.

In contrast to most resorts in Terengganu that have put on hold temporarily all its tourism activities earlier this month, many visitors have started booking for houseboats in Lake Kenyir for two months - November and December.

Houseboat operator Ramli Mustafa, 54, said Lake Kenyir is teeming with different species of freshwater fish and would become a gathering spot for many anglers as the species would normally increase during the monsoon season.

He said sebarau, kelah, temoleh, baung, lampan and belida could be found in abundance in the lake.

"Interestingly, every single time during the monsoon season, Lake Kenyir would turn like a festival as many anglers come here to spend their year-end holidays”, he said.

Another operator, Kamaruddin Razali, 47, said his houseboat, 'Pesona', is fully booked until the end of the year.

"Companies often organised family day for their employees here,” he said.

In addition to the tourism packages offered by houseboat operators, the state government is also promoting the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia by hosting the Asean Monsoon Casting Tournament which will be held from Nov 29 to Dec 2.

It is an annual event organised by the state government during the monsoon season that is expected to attract more than 300 participants including from overseas such as Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Singapore and Brunei.
