16-Year-Old Girls Create App To Encourage Environmental Activities

Nazaratul Naim Mohd Azli, Zarith Hani Muhammad Zairi and Nur Aliah Ardini Ahmad Fairus of Tunku Kurshiah College (TKC) received recognition on Tuesday for their creation of ‘Earthy Us’.

‘Earthy Us’ is an application that facilitates the search for information and up-to-date data on the environment.

Wanting to do their bit in reducing environmental impacts of the annual haze ‘weather’, the 16 year old girls banded together and introduced their creation at the annual Open Data Hackathon 2019 competition from Sept 3-12, the secondary school category.

So what does the app do?

“In our apps, we have several features, which is news and we provide statistics and data concerning environmental pollution and we have features that can detect the nearest recycling centre. And we also put some features like video tutorials on how to cope with disasters and how to prevent pollution,” Mac N Cheese team leader Nazaratul Naim Mohd Azli explained.

She added that this application can also gather society to get involved in environmental activities.

The Mac N Cheese team managed to complete ‘Earthy Us’ in seven days with the help of their teachers and mentors.

The girls' effort proved fruitful when they were announced the first runner up in the category and received a nice, fat reward of RM2,000 from the hackathon organiser, Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).
