KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 -- SME Corporation Malaysia will hold a technology pitching session at the upcoming Future SME Conference 2019 to encourage digitalisation among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

SME Corp chief executive officer Noor Azmi Mat Said said the SMEs could directly discuss with the technology providers for possible collaborations if the technologies are suitable with their operations.

“For example, some SMEs might already be involved with smart manufacturing. By going to this session, they can learn how to upgrade their operations by using sensors and eventually run their businesses with Internet-of-Things.

“They will be able to learn how to adapt to changes and only invest money on what is needed. We know SMEs will get spooked by the idea of investing a lot of money in technology, that is why they must experience these technologies for themselves,” he told a press conference on the soft launch of Future SME Conference 2019.

He said about 30 technology providers would set up booths at the conference and SME Corp expects the conference, to be held from Oct 15 to 16, would be attended by over 500 SMEs.

Themed ‘Engineering the Future’, Noor Azmi said the conference would also highlight sharing sessions with industry professionals, luncheon power talks and networking with industry leaders.

Among topics to be presented are Future ASEAN SME Business Model, Future Transportation Supercluster, Foresights of Working in the Digital Age, Adoption of Future Technology, and Growth from Al Drive Technology by distinguished speakers from Huawei, Axiata, Airbus Malaysia, Aerodyne Ventures Sdn Bhd, ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), among others.

Noor Azmi said the conference aimed to prepare the mentality of local SMEs for the future as well as to adapt to new situations.

“New technologies will mean new business models, new industries and new job titles. The keyword for the next two to three years is the convergence of technology.

“Even right now we can see the existence of data scientists, whereby this person must have knowledge in four areas, namely statistics, programming, basic science and engineering. This is a clear example of the need for convergence of knowledge,” he added.
