KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 -- Drone and robotic technology firm, MATA Aerotech Sdn Bhd aimed to expand the use of drone technology in the management and operation of the country's agriculture within the next five years.

Its chief executive officer Wan Azrain Adnan said the move was to help improve the quality and productivity of the agriculture yield while reducing dependence on labour and operating costs.

He said the use of the drone was in collaboration with GEOSAT Aerospace and Technology Inc. based in Taiwan, that specialized in drones for more than 10 years.

"For example, based on Taiwan Agriculture Research Institute study, droplet pathway by a drone system gives 93 percent pest removal efficiency compared to a manual sprayer with 63 percent," he told Bernama here today.

On July 23, MATA Aerotech had initiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Felcra Berhad for pilot drones used for plantation operations, research and development (R&D) operations and human capital development for drone and robotic technology industry.

Meanwhile, Wan Azrain said the primary focus was to introduce two drone models namely ALPAS II (Helicopter) and the Pterosaur for agricultural purposes.

ALPAS II is an unmanned helicopter equipped with autopilot, autonomous take-off, and landing as well as an automatic flight planning software.

However, the Pterosaur is an unmanned aircraft equipped with autopilot, autonomous landing, and automatic flight planning software.

"We are bringing Pterosaur that can capture aerial imagery for 1,000 hectares within 3 hours and by using our software the report can be generated easily.

"While the ALPAS II (Helicopter) is used for agriculture spraying which only takes 11 minutes to complete spraying of one hectare of paddy field," he added.

Wan Azrain also said the drone had the ability to take photos that identifies diseased plants thus enabling the process of recovery or spraying of pesticides to be carried out quickly and effectively.
