Johor forest fire: Two schools near Gelang Patah to re-open tomorrow

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 27  -- SK Tanjung Adang and SMK Tanjung Adang, which have been closed for two days following the forest fire on Jalan Tanjung Kupang, Kampung Pekajang near Gelang Patah, are set to reopen tomorrow.

Johor Education Department deputy director (school management) Ab Rahim Lamin said based on the monitoring by the Johor Department of Environment (DOE) this afternoon, the situation in the area had improved.

“According to the DOE’s monitoring earlier this afternoon, no smoke was detected moving towards the schools. The wind is also blowing in the opposite direction.

"The burning at the edge of the school area has also been controlled by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM)," he said when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

Both schools will open tomorrow as usual, but with certain precautionary measures, such as all students having to wear face masks which will be supplied, and children with asthma being excused from attending.

Representing the State Education Department, Ab Rahim also expressed gratitude to the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) and the agencies involved directly and indirectly in the operation to douse the forest fire.

Earlier, Johor JBPM Zone 1 chief Mohamad Faizul Selamat said about 70 per cent of the fire which spread over 16 hectares, had been put out.

The seven-day operation involved 140 personnel from JBPM as well as other government agencies.
