KUALA BERANG, Aug 27  -- Two buildings of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Landas in Ajil, near here were badly damaged in a recent storm incident with an estimated loss of RM400,000.

Terengganu State Education Department director Shafruddin Ali Hussin said severe damage was detected in the three-storey academic building and the living skills workshop (a single-storey building) of the school.

"The academic buildings were damaged on the roofs, and ceilings, while trusses were blown away in the storm, and the entire living skills workshop’s roof was damaged.

"The actual damage cost will only be known after a thorough inspection is carried out by the authorities tomorrow morning," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Although the school suffered significant damage, he was thankful that no injuries had been reported.

"I was informed that the storm occurred in a very short time, in just three minutes...fortunately, the students had returned home by that time.

"The process of repairing the building will begin as soon as possible and the learning session will continue as usual. Students of the affected classroom will continue their schooling at Form 6 building which is vacant at the moment," he said.

The school has 315 students.

Shafruddin said the preliminary reports on the damage due to the storm had been sent to the Education Ministry for further action.
