KAJANG, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- The third National Professors Congress to be held later this year will serve as a platform for drawing up resolutions on the New Malaysia concept based on the theme 'Building A Malaysian Identity'.

Congress main committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said the theme is relevant to the current situation where the issue of unity is a concern.

"Unity must be sought with clear action and the role of Rukun Negara can no longer be neglected.

"Our strength in education must encompass all races and no one should dispute their socio-cultural priorities at this level," said Rais, who is also Budi Foundation chairman, after chairing the pre-congress meeting near here today.

Meanwhile, president and chief executive officer of the National Professors Council (MPN) Prof Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose said 2,000 academics nationwide are expected to attend the congress, which is being jointly organised by MPN and Budi Foundation.

He said 12 groups of academics were formed to discuss and produce their respective pre-congress resolutions by covering all aspects of national identity development.

"The virtual participation of academics through the http://kongres.majlisprofesor.my site is also welcome," he said.

He said the date and venue of the congress have yet to be determined but it is expected to be opened by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
