SUNGAI PETANI, April 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia International Young Inventors Olympiad (MIYIO)  is the best platform to expose students to research and development (R& D) and innovation with the potential of turning out more young scientists in the country.

In this regard, The Education Ministry’s Fully Residential and Excellence Schools Management deputy director Shamsuddin Mustapha said such competitions were seen as able to become one of the nation’s preparation in heading towards the era of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution.

‘’We hope more students are keen to participate in competitions like this in to turn out students who are innovative and have high technology next year. Sixty-nine fully residential schools forwarded their respective projects compared to only one national school in Kulim this year.

‘’So, it is my hope that such activities receive widespread participations from primary schools to foster a  R & D culture and the study of an invention,’’ he told reporters after closing the competition which was entering its eighth edition this year, here today.

Shamsuddin said head masters were urged to continue giving encouragement and incentive to their pupils and develop co-operation with skills institutes and universities to obtain expertise and subsequently help to boost their skill.

Meanwhile, he said projects with potentials would also be patented at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Organisation (MylPO), adding that, currently, 150 products had been patented.

The 2019 MIYIO, starting last Friday, received the participation of 10 countries including the United States, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Turkmenistan, with 259 innovative projects contested.

A total 82 projects won the gold, 98 (silver) and 79 (bronze) awards in seven categories contested such as biotechnology, electronic, mechanical and recycling with host Malaysia submitting 152 projects which succeeded in winning 51 gold, 72 (silver) and 35 (bronze) awards.
