Muhammad Rafiq and Mohamad Ridzuan win SAM-100PLUS Top Awards

PETALING JAYA, April 10 --  National bowler, Muhammad Rafiq Ismail and national para athlete, Mohamad Ridzuan Mohd Puzi were named winners of the 2018 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS Best Athlete and Best Para Athlete awards respectively tonight.

Both athletes took home a trophy and RM10,000 cash in prizes each presented by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Also present at the glittering event were the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

At the ceremony, SAM also presented a Special Lifetime Award to SAM royal patron, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah  Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah for his contribution to the country’s sports especially football.

The award edition this year was held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of SAM. 

In this regard, Muhammad Rafiq defeated several top athletes such track cycling champion Mohd Azizulhasni Awang; combination of diving divas, Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Cheong Jun Hoong; Amy Kwan Dict Weng (gymrama); and Mohamad Hazim Amzad (silat).

Muhammad Rafiq Ismail became the first Malaysian in 39 years to win a gold medal at the 2018 World Men's Bowling Championship in Hong Kong.

Earlier, the 22-year-old kegler won a gold in the Men's Masters and a silver in Trio event with Ahmad Muaz Mohd Fishol and Timmy Tan at the 2018 Asian Games.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi, who was crowned as the 2018 Best Asian Male Para Athlete beat Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli and Abdul Latif Romly as well as Bonnie Bunyau Anak Gustin from powerlifting for the Best Para Athlete award.

The Perlis athlete also contributed three gold medals in the Asian Para Games in Jakarta last year as  well as setting new world and Asian records.   

This is the second time Mohamad Ridzuan was crowned the Best Para Athlete after receiving it in 2016.

At the SAM-100PLUS award presentation ceremony, the 31-year-old athlete was also voted for the 100PLUS Fans Award based on the performance throughout 2018.

The ceremony tonight also saw journalists Helmi Talkah and Fabian Peter from Berita Harian/NST crowned recipients of the Siebel Award for their article  'Badminton Dipalit Bookie'. 

Two Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalists, Ahmad Syabil Sultan Noordin Ahmad and Ahmad Nazrin Syahmi Mohamad Arif were nominated among the five best reports in the Best Motoring News Report category.
