KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Former Bond girl, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh will take the lead in a new spin-off from CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery series, according to foreign news reports.

The Discovery star will reprise her role  as Captain Philippa Georgiou and her position as a member of the Starfleet black-ops division Section 31.

The series will be executive produced by Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery) and feature Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt as showrunners.

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories,” said Yeoh in a statement.

“Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes — certainly I believe it will go ‘where no woman has ever gone before!'”

“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades,” Kurtzman was quoted as saying.

“As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou,” he said.

In addition to Discovery, CBS All Access is also developing an as-yet-untitled series bringing back Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and an animated comedy series called Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Yeoh, 56, has also played the overbearing matriarch in Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians,”. She is best known as the sword master in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

The Ipoh-born star became one of the first female Hong Kong action stars, with films such as “Yes, Madam!” “Police Story 3: Supercop” and “Holy Weapon.”

Roles in “Crouching Tiger,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” have helped her become one of the most successful female action heroes of all time.
