Angpao Packets Going Green With Dignity

Last update: 09/01/2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 (Bernama) --  The Dignity for Children Foundation has given a new sheathe to sustainability with the sale of its eco-friendly packets, "Dignity Pao", for the Lunar New Year.

The non-governmental organisation said the reusable packet or better known as "angpao", was designed and manufactured by its  transformational social enterprise, sew X dignity, a platform for students to learn the arts and crafts of sewing and entrepreneurship.

Its chairman and co-founder Rev. Elisha Satvinder said in a statement today, "Here at Dignity we want to do our part in promoting sustainability and green living.

"By upcycling the materials, Dignity hopes to encourage a sustainable way of giving, reduce paper use and, in the long run, eliminates paper waste," Satvinder added.

“These dignityPaos are ever-green and are suitable for all festive occasions and not just Lunar New Year. Furthermore, they are uniquely Malaysian and something that we should be proud to promote. We urge Malaysians to take this first “green” step, and make green the new red for the upcoming new year," added Satvinder.

The dignityPaos are individually sewn by the refugee community and students apprenticing at sew X dignity. Here, youths from challenging backgrounds learn the fundamentals of design, sewing and crafting. Using recycled and donated fabrics, they transform the scraps into quirky and unique bags, scarves, dolls and pouches for sale.

The bespoke dignityPaos are available for sale at RM88 for a set of 10 packets. Proceeds from the sales go directly back to the Foundation to support children’s education and its Transformational Enterprises Programme.
