UTP's STARTX and SEDEX avenues for sparking innovations

Last update: 30/11/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) celebrated innovation by organising two events, Startup Exposition (STARTX) 2018 and the 41st Science & Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX 41) that brought together the most innovative and disruptive startups and inventions.

Both events, running concurrently from Dec 28 to 29, was officiated by UTP vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, it said in a statement.

“As the world is transitioning towards Industrial Revolution 4.0, careers in engineering, science and technology are getting more challenging each day. Graduates need to have an extra edge to show their future employers why they deserve their jobs.

“Events such as STARTX and SEDEX guide our students towards creating those qualities which employers seek. These events are also very much in line with UTP’s vision to be a leader in technology education and centre for creativity and innovation,” Mohamed Ibrahim was quoted as saying at the event.

The events, he said, were also proof of the university's aspiration in preparing students not to become job seekers, but job creators.

According to the statement, STARTX aims to educate UTP students and members of its staff on why entrepreneurship is essential and useful to be applied by each individual in the future.

Featuring 40 booths from 30 companies, the activities carried out during the event covered every segment of entrepreneurship such as exhibitions by UTP startups, local entrepreneurs and government agencies, strategic workshop session and product launches.

Meanwhile, SEDEX serves as a platform to celebrate students' achievement in the STEM field, realise their innovation and vision for the benefit of society, and cultivate the spirit of innovation and learning within the campus.

The event has successfully produced many inventors leading to outputs delivered in the form of prototypes, inventions, new research methodologies and approaches in various fields of expertise.
