Nicol Crashes Out Of Saudi Masters

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- National squash queen, Datuk Nicol David's 2018 Saudi Women's Masters campaign in Riyadh ended with a 0-3 shock defeat to Egypt's Nour El Tayeb in the quarterfinals, on Wednesday.

The former world number one and tournament's fifth seed went down 7-11, 12-14, 9-11 in 35 minutes to the 11th seeded Egyptian, her first defeat against the 24-year-old, having won all nine matches before.

The 34-year-old Penangite advanced to the last eight after eliminating India's Joshna Chinappan 6-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 in the second round yesterday, according to the championship official https://squashinsaudi.com.

Nicol's exit saw Egypt clean sweep the first ever women's professional squash tournament to be held in Saudi Arabia, with world number one and top seed Nour El Sherbini trouncing India's Dipika Pallikal Karthik 11-5, 11-8, 11-4, and Raneem El Welily frustrating England's Sarah-Jane Perry 13-11, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-4.

The winning spree continued with Nouran Gohar triumphing over New Zealand's Joelle King 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 for an all-Egyptian semifinals on Thursday.

Nour El Tayeb is set to face third seed Raneem while Nour El Sherbini will battle it out with Nouran for the prize purse of US$165,000 (about RM660,742).
