KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has made its debut in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017 (THE YUR 2017) which celebrate young universities that have made significant impact on the global arena within only decades.

Ranked between 151-200, UTP is now within the same band with two other Malaysian Research Universities namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), it said in a statement.

Three other Malaysian universities also made it to the list.

They are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, all are ranked at 101-150.

The Young University Ranking is based on the same rigorous performance indicators as the flagship THE World University Rankings which measures institutions on teaching, research, citations, international outlook and knowledge transfer, but with less weight on reputation.

This year's ranking includes 200 institutions from all over the world, an increase from 150 institutions in 2016 and 100 institutions in the previous years.

UTP had also, for the first time, made the list in the THE World University Rankings 2016-2017.

UTP and other Malaysian research universities UKM, UPM, USM and UTM are all ranked in the 601-800 band, it added.

The university also made its maiden entrance in the prestigious THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, coming in at 91st.

This placed UTP among the top 100 best research-led universities in the developing world.

Recently, UTP made its debut into the THE Asia University Rankings 2017, ranking it at the 141-150 band.
