'The Shark Hero Journey' Continues On Shark Conservation

PETALING JAYA, July 27 (Bernama) -- World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Malaysia and Shark Savers Malaysia continue to engage on shark-fin consumption reduction among Malaysians through various programmes from July 2017 to July 2018.

The programmes under 'Be A Shark Hero' (BASH) project, continued advocating shark conservation through public events and social media from last year, said Shark Savers Malaysia chief executive officer, Abner Yap.

According to him, the BASH project is a sequel to the 'My Fin My Life' campaign that concluded in December 2016, which garnered nationwide attention on the issue of shark finning and shark fin soup consumption.

"To spread the awareness of saving sharks effectively, we have to inspire others to make changes and make the awareness go 'viral'.

"We have and continue to work with corporate companies from various industries to empower them to achieve a larger shift in mindset towards this environmental goal," he told reporters at the launch of 'BASH', here, today.

Yap said the BASH project started with the launch of 'I'm a Shark Hero' name card by Linkodes, a digital business card mobile application vendor, followed by a series of initiatives lined up for this year's calendar at 'sharksaversmalaysia' Facebook page.

"We will have a 12-hour International Ultra-Marathon Challenge at Bandar Sri Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan from 9pm on Aug 5 to 9am on Aug 6, where we will raise awareness of overfishing of sharks in Malaysia by running in shark costumes," he said.

Shark Savers Malaysia project manager, Alicia Tan said a month-long contest for 'Ang Pow' designs would be conducted in October this year to support the cause, whereby individuals, organisations and artists were invited to take part.

"The winning design will be given the honour to be printed as Shark Savers Malaysia Ang Pow 2018 (Year of the Dog) packets, with credit mention and in all advertising and promotion channels," she said.

"The BASH Run will be held on Nov 18 at Sun Suria City, Sepang, where families and kids are welcomed to take part in this 4km conservation run," she said.
